Toyota Motor North America posted 222,378 units in April, down 4.6% year over year. Lexus was the real story, off almost 20%. And yet when I look at the competitive set and what everyone else is dealing with right now, this still reads like a relatively controlled situation. The industry comparison period is brutal because April 2025 was a tariff panic buying sprint that artificially inflated every brand's numbers. Toyota's hybrid mix is doing real work right now. Electrified vehicles were up 11.2% and now represent 55.8% of total Toyota sales for the month. That is not a rounding error. That is a brand that has been building toward this moment for fifteen years while everyone else was chasing a BEV roadmap that the market was not ready for. The Lexus decline is worth watching though. That is the segment where pricing pressure from tariff uncertainty hits hardest and that customer has more options than they used to.

Hybrid buyers areā¦
Hybrid buyers are increasingly informed, often returning customers, and they are not as easily moved off MSRP as a conquest buyer who is less brand-committed. The negotiating dynamic in the box on a RAV4 HEV right now is different from what it was two years ago. Supply is still the constraint not demand, which means you are having a different kind of conversation. On the Lexus decline the original post is right to flag it. NX and RX tariff exposure is real and that customer is now cross-shopping Genesis GV70 and BMW X3 more seriously than they were 18 months ago. The conquest window for those brands on a tariff-pressured Lexus buyer is open right now.
